Urological Treatments Related to Male Fertility and Sexual Health

Urology is a medical and surgical specialty, focusing on the male reproductive system and urinary tract. Because they are closely linked, disorders of the reproductive system may affect the urinary tract and vice versa. Therefore, it is vital to find a doctor with expertise in both systems for the best diagnosis and treatment of a urological disorder or male infertility concern.

At Male Fertility & Sexual Medicine Specialists we have treated many urological disorders concerning various areas of the body such as the prostate, kidneys, urinary tract or the bladder. Dr. Bastuba is a part of the elite group of 2% of board-certified urologists in the U.S. who has received specialized training in the treatments and procedures relating to urology and male fertility.

General Urology Treatments

In the past decade, state-of-the-art techniques have been emerging in the field of urology. Urology is a medical specialty focusing on the medical and surgical diseases of the kidneys and urinary tract, which include the ureters, bladder and urethra, the male reproductive system and genitalia.

Urology is one of the few specialties that also dabbles in pediatric and plastic/reconstructive techniques. Urologists are second only to Radiologists and Radiotherapists as being the most "radioactive" doctors since we rely strongly on radiographic and ultrosonographic studies. As a result, Urologists are as highly skilled as Radiologists and Ultrasonologists when performing or reading imaging studies of the genito-urinary tract, and these include CAT Scans and MRI's, as well as Radionucleide scans. As San Diego's leading expert in infertility and sexual dysfunction, Dr. Bastuba offers state-of-the-art treatment options for urological disorders to his patients.

Urological Disorder - Enlarged Prostate (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia - BPH)

Although it is not known exactly what causes an enlarged prostate, it is a common condition generally affecting men over age 50. More than half of all men over the age of 60 have symptoms of an enlarged prostate. Symptoms for BPH may include a frequent need to urinate, difficulty starting urination, weak urine flow and the feeling of being unable to completely empty your bladder. Treatment options for BPH include medication, surgery or minimally invasive therapies such as TUNA Therapy (Transurethral Needle Ablation) or Targis® using Cooled ThermoTherapy™ (transurethral microwave thermotherapy -TUMT®). TUNA Therapy involves placing small needles into your prostate, which radio waves pass through creating scar tissue. The scar tissue shrinks the prostate allowing urine to flow more easily. TUMT treatment uses an antenna to release microwave energy which breaks down the enlarged tissue, through the microwave heat.
